Tarneeb: how to play

Bid 7–13 tricks, name the trump, and take them with your partner.

Four players in two teams; partners sit opposite. 13 cards each.

Bidding

Starting left of the dealer, each player bids a number of tricks from 7 to 13 (higher than the last bid) or passes. Once you pass you're out of the auction. When only the highest bidder is left, they win the bid. If everyone passes, the cards are redealt.

The winner names the trump suit (the tarneeb) and leads the first trick.

Playing

Follow the suit led if you can. If you can't, play anything, including a trump. The highest trump wins the trick; with no trump, the highest card of the suit led.

Scoring

  • Bidding team takes at least its bid: it scores the tricks it took.
  • Bidding team falls short: it loses the bid, and the other team scores the tricks it took.
  • Bid 13 and take all 13: you win the game on the spot.

First team to 31 or 41 (your choice) wins.
