Konkan & Rummy: how to play

Make sets and runs, open with enough points, then go out first.

Melds

  • Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same rank, all different suits (7♠ 7♥ 7♦).
  • Run: 3 or more of one suit in order (4♥ 5♥ 6♥). Ace is low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A), never both.
  • Jokers stand in for any card.

A turn

  1. Draw from the deck, or take the top discard.
  2. Meld (optional): lay down melds, add cards to melds on the table ("lay off"), or swap a joker on the table for the real card it stands for.
  3. Discard one card.

Go out by melding all your cards and discarding the last one.

Konkan (كونكان)

  • 2 decks + 2 jokers. 14 cards each; the first player gets 15 and starts by discarding.
  • Your first lay-down (opening) must be worth at least 51 points (81 or 101 by option). Cards count face value, J/Q/K 10, ace 11 (1 in A-2-3).
  • You can only take the discard before opening if you open with it that turn. Changed your mind? Put it back.
  • Laying off and swapping jokers only after you've opened.

Classic Rummy

1 deck, no jokers. 7 cards each (10 with two players), no opening minimum.

Scoring

When someone goes out, everyone else counts their hand as penalty points (ace 11, J/Q/K 10, joker 25). In Konkan, a player who never opened takes 100. After the chosen number of rounds, the lowest total wins.
