Letter Tiles: how to play

Build crossing words on the board, use the premium squares, use all seven tiles.

Each player has 7 letter tiles. The first word must cover the centre star. After that, each word must connect to tiles already on the board.

On your turn, place tiles in one row or one column, without gaps (tiles already on the board can fill them). Every new word you make, across and down, must be a real word, and they all score.

  • Each tile has a value (E = 1 … Q, Z = 10). Blanks (no letter) are worth 0 and can be any letter.
  • Premium squares count for the tiles placed on them this turn: DL / TL double or triple the letter, DW / TW double or triple the whole word.
  • Use all 7 tiles in one turn: +50.
  • Instead of playing you can swap tiles (if the bag has 7 or more) or pass.

Try it on the board

Your first word must cover the ★. Try PLAYED across it: the pink DW square doubles the word.

The game ends when someone uses their last tile with the bag empty (they also get everyone else’s remaining tile values), or after six scoreless turns in a row. Options: 15×15 or a quick 11×11 board; turn the dictionary check off for house rules.
